CRITICAL

Engine Coolant Temperature / Overheating

Can I keep driving?NO

Stop somewhere safe and switch off the engine.

What does it mean?

The engine coolant temperature may be too high, indicating that the engine is overheating. On some vehicles, a red cooling-system warning can also indicate that the coolant level is dangerously low.

What should I do?

  1. Stop somewhere safe as soon as possible.
  2. Switch off the engine.
  3. Allow the engine and cooling system to cool fully.
  4. Do not remove the coolant reservoir or radiator cap while the engine is hot.
  5. Once the engine is cold, check the coolant level according to the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.
  6. If the coolant level is low, use the correct coolant specified by the manufacturer.
  7. If the warning remains, the engine continues to overheat, coolant is leaking, or you are unsure of the cause, do not continue driving. Seek breakdown assistance or professional inspection.

Possible causes

  • Low coolant level
  • Coolant leak
  • Cooling-fan fault
  • Thermostat fault
  • Water-pump fault
  • Blockage or other cooling-system fault
  • Sensor or electrical fault
  • More serious engine fault
